this is what became of the fabrics that i showed in early december from the mystery i tested for dorothy young, apocketfullofmysteries, that was done on christmas day by the group. it still needs borders--this is where i usually stop on the quilt. i really like how this turned out....
next, is new years eve mystery quilt. ann did a great job of having us do some pre-sewing of 8 billion half-square triangles. that made this quilt a joy to work on during the mystery. if we had to do them DURING the mystery, we would all want to hang ourselves before we ever finished that step! i used some leaf fabrics and rusty orange and a REALLY dark green and was pretty pleased with the results. the background and the focus fabric have the same light green background so there is not as much contrast as there should be in the snowball blocks showing up well, but all in all i am happy with the quilt. it is still just in blocks because i have not decided on which setting i want to use.....this....
or.....this.....which looks LOTS better in real life and not as wonky :o)
I WOULD APPRECIATE COMMENTS AND VOTES TO TELL ME WHICH ONE YOU PREFER.....it is 5 blocks square both ways, and still needs borders added too, which will mostly be the focus fabric in the snowballs. i think it is funny how both ann and dorothy used snowballs in the mysteries this year. both are stunning quilts and easy to make.....the new years day mystery is quite another story!!!
this new years day mystery quilt top was a pain in the ass to make.....i would never have chosen to make it as the pattern was written. it frustrated me because it was just toooooo much work for a mystery that was supposed to be done in one day. granted, it is small (it is 40 inches square finished) those flying geese (all 80 of them!!!) FINISH at 1 x 2 inches!!! and, they should have been bordered with full long strips instead of doing it how it was designed....i did a really lousy job of matching the seams when putting the geese together, but i was soooooo sick of doing this i didn't even care anymore if they were off a thread or two, or even an 1/8th of an inch in some spots....it was just a chore to get done.....anyway, i quit for the day after that step and had to work on other stuff....finally finished it yesterday by putting it all together and adding 6 inch borders all the way round of the focus fabric that i used to pull the colors from.....all in all, i am happy with it, and glad that i did it after all, but it was a pain....now, i wonder when it will ever get quilted! my goal is to get as many of my tops quilted as possible this year....what good is a top if it never gets to grow up to be a quilt?

Lynne, I saw your post on stashbusters and breezed over to check out your mystery quilts. It is a real hard choice between the 2 settings. I'll go with the first one only because that was my 1st choice.

Lynne, I really like the first mystery quilt, it is very eye pleasing and quite different from the norm.
Lynne, I like the first one the best. The colors are nice and the pattern is beautiful. I can visualize it with some fabric to make it look like morroccan(sp?) tile work.
All 3 mysteries are great, I can't even imagine doing all those tiny little geese. Maybe when they're that little they should be sparrows (or whatever kind of tiny bird flies in formation, if any). Anyway, on the middle one, I like them both, but I am a bit partial to the second, and wonder what it will look like with borders. Right now, it has kind of a scalloped look. Does your comment in the first paragraph about stopping at the borders mean that you are one of the quilters who has lots of almost finished tops? I can see how that could happen.
yes candace, i have a huge stack of tops that are stopped at the border. it is my goal this year to work on that stack and get borders on them and then quilted! that is my other problem.....i can't afford to send them all out the the long armer, and i do not have the confidence in my own quilting of large things so they tend to just sit there with the borderless ones.....and, i have come to the conclusion that a wobbily quilted quilt is much better than a flimsy top that is just sitting there waiting for me to work on it.....
All the quilts are beautiful!
I like both ways for the new years eve mystery quilt, but I prefer the 2nd setting for my own odd reasons! lol
Great job!!!
Lynne, I agree that the first setting is more pleasing, especially if you like symmetry of squares. Both are lovely
Hi Lynne, really hard to say. I choosed the third possibility, which you did not like at all perhaps???? But they are beautiful all. You have seved as crazy!!!Dont become angry to me saying so? I printed also that with small flying geese, but can think another border instead. I have quilted myself all tops ready now. Have one smaller tablecloth left. Your telling about your memorial visit was so beautiful. God bless you! Hugs:Aune
