a bit more on the mystery

i have GOT to sit down and count out those exact numbers of all those billions of squares for you, but when i did it originally i kept getting different numbers LOL

i know that there are approximately 350 of each of the 3 colors, my black, purple, and green. and, about 900ish of the background, my wow. i KNOW need to sit down and count them out again, but for now let those approximate numbers suffice please. i am going to post how many are needed for the first block as well as the diagram of the block on july 1st. there will be 25 blocks. i a going to post one the first week, and 2 each week following, so in 12 weeks we will have all the blocks and the 13th week we will get the diagram of where they all go. i am not posting them in the right number order :o)

remember, this is THE EASIEST QUILT YOU WILL EVER MAKE with the most bang for your buck i think. it is stunning when done, but it really is just thousands of squares sewn together. the key is to have a consistent seam width ALL THE TIME. pressing well is also important i think to help it stay nice a crisp and easier to assemble.

i am going to assume that you all know how to assemble 9 patches and do the pressing so that the seams butt well when assembling but will give a little tutorial too with the first week. as well as how i use this as a leaders/enders project even when i am not following the chart for a block for a little get ahead of the game before i work the chart....

so, get a chopping on your fabrics and get those piles of squares cut. i find it easiest to keep track of how many i have cut by safety pinning them in stacks of 25. if you are using scrappy, make the stacks scrappy too :o)

not too much longer til the first! i can't wait to see the fabrics or colorways that you all are gonna use! post a comment and let me know what you are using and if you want, e-mail me a picture and i can upload them here too.....i am sooooo toying with the idea of making another one along with you and doing it miniature...i have nearly talked myself into it! i want to use my treadle machine for it......in some ways i hope i don't talk myself into it LOL i have way too many irons in the fire right now as it is, but who could resist this??? not me......i love celtic knotwork, and i love this design....i really want one of a trinity knot. that is really the knot that just stirs my soul.....even have it tatooed on both feet....and i always take a picture of them in the ocean when ever i am there.....the picture at the top is of when we were on our cruise in mexico this past april....but, reading that i WANT a pattern of a trinity knot SHOULD give you a hint that this is not a trinity knot that we are gonna be making LOL

Hi Lynne
My name is Carla, I live in south Brazil(almost the south of the world). I love to do Mystery quilts, I'm doing 2 now and I Love your plans about Celtic Knot.
I'm in patchwork/quilting life for just 1 and a half years now but I'm addicted. I'm 48 years old, have a couple of teens, I'm a pediatrician and in my free time(which is sacred, of course) I stitch. I'm planning to do your mysterty quilt too, but I have some doubts about colors. Can I use any color or I have to use something in greens and purples?
Thank you from the coldest part of Brazil
Carla

carla,

you can use any colors that you choose....the original designed by deborah cohen was scrappy very lights used for the background and reds, greens and blacks for her 3 colors. you just want to make sure that your colors really read the color that you want them to if using prints....like if you have a large print that has lots of large areas of colors it will not work well.

the main thing is that you want CONTRAST in all of the colors. if you chose a dark back ground you would want 3 colors that would show on it well, so they should be fairly light....or jewel toned would be great! i think actually that a black background with red, blue, and green would be amazing! or fall colors with a browns background with oranges, golds, brick reds or sagey greens would be VERY pretty...you can use anything you want, just make sure that you clearly see each color so that you can easily follow the path of the knotwork it makes.

i jsut chose green and purple because it came from my black fabric easily and i have TONS of those colors LOL

Lynne: This is a cool idea. I can do 2 blocks a week. And, since I hate to cut I may have to see what I have in the way of squares already cut. I could use up some of the squares I've already cut. (Hum, wouldn't that be neat!

What size were the squares that you used in the corner that you showed us? Just curious. I have lots of 3" squares already and some 4.5" or so also. Thanks for sharing. Bonnie

bonnie,

i used 2 1/2 inch squares. i am going to do another one in miniature though i think using 1 1/2 or 1 1/4 inch squares.....i am trying to convince myself to clean off my treadle machine and to do it on that....i am not sure what colors i want to use for it though.
