only one post since november started and that was only most of halloween.....not even halloween nite, or caoin's birthday.....both of which were grand by the way.....lots of great pictures of fun at the church festival.....waaaaayyyyy too much candy as usual, but a grand time was had by all.
i have been busy with some knitting, some sewing of CUTE schlep bags that carry an enormous amount of stuff to schlep around :o) and lots of other stuff....
i went apple picking with a friend and had such a wonderful all-is-right-with-my-world time--nothing like fresh air and fresh apples. it was a wonderful morning spent with my friend. then, after i schlepped all those apples home, processing them was wonderful fun baking the best apple crisp known to man, preparing lots of apple slices in cinnamon and sugar to freeze for pies and apple crisp for later....made some applesauce and also, just plain eating.....yum!
it got me in the mood for seasonal cooking--which meant taking stock of what is on hand...cleaned out the pantries, and all the cupboards. what a HUGE job, but really wonderful to get it done. well, almost done. i have just a few more cabinets to do, but we have tons of them so the bulk of the work is done. i was thrilled to find out that we have so much stuff--cases of foods that will be used thruout the year......again, the wonderful all-is-right-with-my-world feeling.....
i think that it was really healing actually, helped me work thru some stuff, and also, it is something that i always do at this time of the year--so i am ready for the holiday baking etc.....i always shared my doing it with my sister ruth and she was always happy for me to have a cleaned and organized kitchen. ready for the holidays.....
i have been home and a hermit for alot of the month.....not really feeling like socializing much, but that is getting better. i really miss my sister. i tell ya, i hate grief and mourning.....it just sucks. but, life does go on, and mourning does eventually turn to joy (not fully til we get to heaven though is what i believe, and have experienced....) so, i am working thru it, just takes time.....
but, i have so many things finished and great pictures that i need to get off the camera and into the computer. that was wonderful to think that there were things to share, shea got more of her tatoo done (and yes, i do know that i spell it wrong, i just do.....don't know why i dont fix it in my typing of it that it really needs 2 t's) but, i never got to sitting down to post....now, too many things to write about......take this saturday afternoon and sunday for example.....
my new car, the fires near my sisters house (chino hills) and preparing to evacuate and then actually getting evacuated and staying at the high school with my sister and neices and nephew... going on our 5K walk for ovarian cancer (runforher.com) and back to the evacuation place....my son in law witnessing a hit and run of a man changing his tire on the shoulder of the freeway--he chased the car down and got the plates etc and the lady got arrested....the man will hopefully live they said, but will lose both legs......i came home and started right in on driving kids around from work etc....then, i got sick.....probably too much emotional stuff going on in such a short span of time with no sleep--but i am lots better today :o)
perhaps i will post some pics soon of some of the finished knit things, the schlep bags, the fire, the evacuation, the 5K, the new phase of the tatoo---gosh, it makes me tired just thinking of doing it.....but, tomorrow is another day, and with each new day comes fresh hope.......

do you have a recipe to share for the best apple crisp ever? Seems I try recipes and then lose them and some are just mediocre anyway.
it is REALLY easy. i have a really large family though so i make it in a 9 x 13 pan. peel, core and slice apples. and lay them in the pan til about 1 inch thick. i use a combination of mostly granny smith and then a few reds thrown in for a bit more sweetness and juice.
sprinkle liberally with strong cinnamon sugar mixed with 2 tsp. of cornstarch and stir. add about 1 tablespoon of water at one of the sides (so you don't wash off the cinnamon sugar lol)
now, the BEST part! top with 2 sticks REAL butter cut into 2 cups white flour, and 2 cups white sugar til it is pretty small. if there are a few little "holes" here and there in the topping, the juices can bubble up thru the topping. like a pie with the slits :o)
bake at 350 for about an hour til nice and lightly golden brown and bubbly. resist temptation and let it cool a bit or you will scald your tongue. it is great with cream, whipped or liquid, or with ice cream, or plain....there are never leftovers. there is never enough.....
you can make an 8x8 pan though and half the topping ingredients.
hope you like it! it is a family recipe that we have used for more than 50 years....
THanks so much Lynne! Sounds yummy esp with all the butter :) I LOVE butter! I had 6 kids so I know how everything disappears so quick. Unless it was easy recipes like this one or ones that made alot, desserts were sometimes scarce...alot of work to see it not last an hour! I'm having quite a crew up for THanksgiving and this may make it on the menu for later on in the week after pies are gobbled up! Hugs!
Found your blog by way of stashbusters group... Your best apple crisp recipe sounds WONDERFUL! I am going to make a small version for our Thanksgiving table. Thanks so much for posting the "how tos"!!
:)
Sounds like you've had a tough month - make sure to take care of yourself now and then! I'd love to see the photos of the knitted items. I'm on a knitting streak here as well, but mostly just socks and mittens for holiday presents. Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours!
