What's cookin'

If you have been following along my blog at all, you should know that I LOVE my feet. i LOVE my tattoos. I LOVE taking pictures of them in water.....especially the ocean.....the above picture is one of my favorite pictures taken recently on my trip to redding at a creek feeding whiskeytown lake.....

For the LONGEST time I have wanted to make a quilt of the one on my right foot--which would be the foot on the left in the above picture since my legs are crossed. I finally figured out how to do it using my new favorite book. I am the happiest woman ever.

What is my new favorite book you ask?? Celtic Pieced Illusions by karen combs (http://www.karencombs.com/) and at her website you can see her book and also how her method works thru a little video and a tutorial.

what i LOVE about this book is that it is not just a book of patterns--even if that was all you were getting, that would be sooooo worth it--but, it has so much theory presented in it as well. she talks about colors, values, scales of prints, how celtic knotwork "works" and gives you tools to graph out your own designs and lessons on how to do so thru simple steps she walks you through. Then, she also tells you how to calculate your fabric amounts, and how to cut for the quilt YOU design on your own. AND, then, there are 14 of her own designs already done and calculated for you if you don't want to design your own......BUT, I WANTED TO DESIGN MY OWN--AND I DID!!!!!!

I was finally able to chart out my tattoo on my right foot.....it is pretty close too! I am going to make it next--and you can make one too--IF you buy her book.....you can not make it without it--i can share my chart, but not much else with karen's blessings.....she HAS given her blessing.

I got mine by going to http://www.bookfinder.com/ and bought it thru A1books for only $12.43 and that included shipping!!! it was the BEST $12.43 i ever spent LOL

This is really a fantastic book that if you like celtic knotwork, you will want to own for yourself. There is so much good stuff in there. And, you will need it if you want to make my design because i will not be posting things like cutting or technique directions, i will only be posting my 15 different blocks to make and then the chart of how to lay them out......as well as my own tweeking of 2 of the 15 blocks--but, this really can be made with karen's method of the 2 basic blocks.....totally amazing!!!

so, now that it is charted, i am working on the fabric calculations and cutting directions. i will be using 3 different blues, a goldy-yellow, and white on white.....I will be starting my tattoo quilt in september sometime if any of you want to play along GO GET YOUR OWN BOOK!!!! you WILL want your own, you will not want to share it.....i promise--YES, it IS that good!

Wow, Lynne - that sounds like fun. I love your tattoos, too, and maybe I'll join you in making another Celtic quilt (got to finish my Celtic Knotwork mystery first, though!!).

Update - I ordered the book - looks great. I got mine on half.com for $14.25 (you got the best deal on yours but there were none left on bookfinder.com at that price).

I ordered mine from amazon.ca (used). I'm very excited as I was trying to draft a celtic trinity knot on my own and could see it would take me some time so I'm looking forward to reading the book. Thanks for sharing it Lynne!

you will LOVE the book ladies. I am HAPPY that you will work with me on this :o) SOOOOO glad that you are not jumping ship as soon as the current sew-a-long is finished LOL

and, the best part is, is that you will get to have as much information as i do :o) i will give you charts of the blocks that i am using and the color placements...so, there will not be the mistakes of my typos that there was on the current one.

i finished charting the border today--my tattoo doesn't have a border, but i think that the quilt will want one. this baby is 16 x 16 squares and you can make it in 3 or 6 or 9 inch squares...9 inch would make a tent LOL I am making one of each a 3 and a 6. i figured out the yardage and cuts (page 37 when you get your books!!!) (what a tease huh???) for the 6 inch for ONE of the 3blues....gonna do a bit more calculating tomorrow....this is SO fun!!!

can't wait to post the blocks i am using--now with the borders there are 21 different combinations of colors and placements of her basic blocks.

but for now, i am off to bed :o)

Lynne, I have that book by Karen, I love it, even IF I haven't made the quilts I want to out of it yet. But, the design of your tatoo will make a great wall hanging! I am in.

welcome dorothy :o) glad you are going to play along with us too. it is a great book huh? so, it is the square-ish one, and i added a trinity knot in each corner and a line connecting them as my border, i think it helped finish it off. it added 6 more block combinations to the 15, so now there are 21--eek! sounds intimidating, but it isn't really. she does such a good job of explaining how to do things, that when i post the 21 blocks you will beable to do your own figuring out of the fabric requirements and cutting instructions.....i want to double check my blocks.....

I am so glad you finally bought that book! I knew you would love it. I am working on yet another quilt out of that book, with plans for a couple more. Karen Combs definitely has the easiest method of quilting Celtic knots available.

I have that book and this will be a great opportunity to use it! LOL! While looking at some of Karen Comb's other quilts, I found this video with tips for her Celtic patterns. Here's a link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ou6yP9cxIqk
